What Are Stick Electrodes?

Welding electrodes are metal wires with baked on chemical coatings. The rod is used to sustain the welding arc and to provide the filler metal required for the joint to be welded. The coating protects the metal from damage, stabilizes the arc, and improves the weld. The diameter of the wire, less the coating, determines the size of the welding rod. This is expressed in fractions of an inch such as 3/32", 1/8", or 5/32." The smaller the diameter means it requires less current and it deposits a smaller amount of filler metal.

These are a pound (1lb) of 14" Mild Steel Stick Electrodes with 5/32" Diameter, E7018 AWS Classification

Welding 7018 WEST ARCO Brand. It is an electrode whose coating is basic type, low hydrogen, to be used with direct current, positive polarity (+) or with alternating current (75 OCV minimum). Due to the iron powder, it has a high deposition rate and low splash losses. Its graphitized arc end gives it excellent ignition. The solder deposit gives excellent radiographic quality and high impact resistance at low temperature.

Features

  • Identification: West arco E7018-1
  • Classification: AWS E7018-1
  • Specification: AWS A5.1, NTC 2191, ASME SFA5.1
  • Approved: ABS (Grade 3H10, 3Y) Lloyd’s (3Ym)

Applications

It is used for welding carbon steel with up to 70,000 Ibs/in² tensile strength, in applications in pipe structures and pressure tanks, especially when high impact resistance at low temperatures is required.
